Mitsubishi Mirage G4 sedan offers most for least plus top fuel economy in 2019

Mitsubishi is the fastest growing Asian brand in the U.S for the second year in a row, say company officials.  Total model sales in the U.S. for 2018 were up 13.9 percent with the entry level Mirage and Mirage G4 cars up 8.6 percent for the year.

In the face of declining car sales in the U.S. market – plus competing with the likes of the Nissan Versa and Hyundai Accent – the Mitsubishi Mirage and Mirage G4 are off to another good start in 2019, up 14.8 percent from same period in 2018.

They must be doing something right, so we asked Mitsubishi to send us one to find out.

We recently spent a week drive testing the Mitsubishi Mirage G4 subcompact sedan in and around Austin, Texas. It won’t win any awards for styling, but if you need solid, basic and economical transportation that is an easy drive – a Mitsubishi Mirage G4 sedan will do it for you.

We found the G4 be a nice entry level sedan with a very low price starting at $14,795, its low cost of ownership and great fuel economy – in fact – the same reasons it was recently named the 2019 Vincentric Best Value in America in the subcompact segment.

Its small size makes it a good city car for everyday errands around town.  It has a generous cabin with wide and tall doors for ease of entry and exit, nice size trunk, good visibility and drives comfortably around town or on the highway.

As Tested – 2019 Mitsubishi Mirage G4 SE Sedan

Our test Mirage G4 SE came in Mystic Black Metallic color with a Light Gray interior.  The MSRP was $17,495.  With a couple of Port-installed accessory items and delivery, our 2019 Mitsubishi Mirage G4 priced at 18,525.

There are just three trims in the Mirage G4 lineup starting at $14,795 for the manual transmission ES and $15,995 for the CVT followed by a special Rockford Fosgate Limited Edition and the SE.

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_image src=”https://ticket-1994427.inwheeltime.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/20190421_115207.jpg” alt=”2019 Mitsubishi G4 SE ” title_text=”2019 Mitsubishi G4 SE ” align=”center” align_tablet=”center” align_last_edited=”on|desktop” admin_label=”2019 Mitsubishi G4 SE ” _builder_version=”3.23″ animation_style=”fade”][/et_pb_image][et_pb_text _builder_version=”3.27.4″]

Powertrain

Our front-wheel drive Mirage G4 SE was powered by a 1.2L DOHC 3-cylinder gasoline engine producing 78 horsepower at 6,000 rpm with 74 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,000 rpm. It was mated to a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT).

Excuse us if we refer to this powertrain as a bit underwhelming for our taste.   We suggest drivers keep that foremost in mind when pulling onto a busy road from a dead stop.  Give the oncoming traffic plenty of room. You will need it.

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_image src=”https://ticket-1994427.inwheeltime.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/20190421_114329.jpg” alt=”2019 Mitsubishi G4 SE ” title_text=”2019 Mitsubishi G4 SE ” align=”center” align_tablet=”center” align_last_edited=”on|desktop” admin_label=”2019 Mitsubishi G4 SE ” _builder_version=”3.23″ animation_style=”fade”][/et_pb_image][et_pb_text _builder_version=”3.27.4″]

As for going up an onramp to the freeway – give oncoming 18-wheelers all the room you are able – and then some. Standing on the gas pedal, the G4 accelerates painfully slow making that tractor/trailer combo really big, really fast in your mirror.  When merged, the G4 actually drives pretty nice at freeway speeds which brings us to another caution. Pulling out to change lanes or pass will need lots of room also.

There is a bright spot though.  Fuel economy on the G4 with a CVT is 35/41 mpg city/highway and 37 mpg combined. The fuel tank is small holding only 9.2 gallons, but with that fuel economy on the highway, a G4 sedan will carry you over 350 miles between fill-ups.

Other powertrain features include Hill Start Assist and Cruise Control.

Mechanicals

The Mirage G4 is a surprisingly smooth ride and good handling car around town and on the highway.  With a curb weight of just 2,194 pounds, we found its road stability to be very good both around town and at highway speed.

Underneath is a MacPherson Strut with stabilizer front suspension and torsion bars to the rear. Other elements include Rack and Pinion Electric Power Steering and a  ventilated disc brake front and drum rear – Anti-Lock Brake system with Electronic Brake Force Distribution and Brake Assist system.

Wheels are 15-inch aluminum alloy and mounted with P175/55R15 All-season tires.

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_image src=”https://ticket-1994427.inwheeltime.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/20190421_114429.jpg” alt=”2019 Mitsubishi G4 SE” title_text=”2019 Mitsubishi G4 SE” align=”center” align_tablet=”center” align_last_edited=”on|desktop” admin_label=”2019 Mitsubishi G4 SE” _builder_version=”3.23″ animation_style=”fade”][/et_pb_image][et_pb_text _builder_version=”3.27.4″]

The Mirage G4 comes in seven colors.  A hint to the media fleet folks at Mitsubishi, the Black on our test vehicle did not wow us. One of the colors or the white (with the dark chrome alloy wheels) would have given us higher value first impression.

Interior

The color pallet styling is nicely done with variable finish accents giving it a richer look. The seating is covered with a durable cloth in a ribbed pattern front and rear.  Front seat adjustment was manual – 6-way driver including height and 4-way passenger. Seating was heated and comfortable both front and rear.

Features included a console with cupholders, automatic climate control with Micron Air Filtration, rear seat heater ducts, remote keyless entry with pushbutton start, lots of Piano Black panels and panel accents, leather-wrapped tilting steering wheel with audio, phone and voice controls, rear seat armrest with cupholders, passthrough to the trunk plus cabin and cargo interior lighting.

Notable was the impressive cabin space for five with its wide and high door openings. Front headroom was 38.9-inches with 36.8-inches rear.  Legroom was 41.7-inches front and 37.3-inches rear with shoulder room both front and rear of over 51-inches.  Trunk is nice sized at 12.6-cubic feet of cargo space.

Technology

Technology was not overwhelming but certainly adequate for an entry level subcompact.  It featured a 6.5-inch Smartphone Link Display Audio system with four speakers, Bluetooth Wireless Technology, AM/FM/CD/MP3, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, USB and a 12-volt power ports.

The display was not as crisp as some, and surrounded by Piano Black trim, it suffered more glare than we would like.

Mirage Hatchback

The G4 sedan’s hatchback sibling is the 5-door Mirage. It is powered by the same 1.2L three-cylinder engine as the G4 sedan.  Its starting MSRP is $13,795 for the MT version and $14,995 for the CVT.

While the G4 is the most fuel efficient in its segment, the Mirage hatchback has the best fuel economy of any 2019 non-hybrid passenger vehicle in America at 36/43 mpg city/highway and 39 mpg combined.

It comes in five trim levels topping out with the GT MSRP $16,995 (CVT only).  As with the G4, delivery is $845.
